How do I take care of my hair?

My parents are from coastal Africa, so my hair is very nappy. I've been growing it out for about half a year, and now I'm using Suave Naturals Shampoo and Conditioner about once a week. My hair stays moisturized for longer, but even before this, my hair is still uncontrollable. I can't comb it with out strands of it coming out on the pick. Not even when my hair is soaking wet after shampooing and conditioning. I don't know what to do. I'm trying to go for an afro, but I'm not having a lot of luck. Any advice?
